The Harry Potter film adaptations are far better than people give them credit for
If the Fantastic Beasts movies have shown us anything, it’s that Rowling’s writing does not lend itself to cinematic storytelling. Her stories are too crowded and lacks the focus and structure of a film. And that’s quite alright. After all, she is primarily a book author. What doesn’t work on screen can make a wonderful reading experience. However, she applies the same storytelling style to her screenplays, and the result is a bit of a hot mess (see Crimes of Grindelwald). I have no doubt whatsoever that the story currently being told would make marvelous books, however they kinda fall flat in their present medium. Michael Goldenberg and Steve Kloves, the writers of the eight Harry Potter films, do not get nearly enough credit or praise for their ability to boil down Rowling’s massive ensambles and various plot lines to focused, well structured films of two hours each. So for what it’s worth, kudos to Michael and Steve. You’re awesome!
